Features of the 2009 Exhibition include...

Special Featured Display...

Rug Hooking magazine's "Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XIX". Your only opportunity to see an exhibit of the year's BEST rugs exclusively at Sauder Village! Click here for more information about this exciting display.

Featured Teacher...  Diane Phillips, Fairport, NY rugsdp@rochester.rr.com

Creating hand-hooked art has been Diane's passion for 13 years. Specializing in Unusual Uses of Color and Hooking Faces, both people and animals, her favorite subjects. Eyes, expression, skin tones, wrinkles, high-lights, all conspire to tell a story to the viewer. Hand-dyed wool produces a depth and texture unlike any other medium. Diane creates the portrait and lets the story emerge.

Eight years ago she left corporate America and now pursues art full time. The Director of Hooked in the Mountains Rug School at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont (in conjunction with the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild) for the past seven years, she has also taught workshops throughout the U.S., Canada and in segments of "Uncommon Threads" an HGTV network television series. Her work has appeared in shows and museums in the Northeast and her "5 of Hearts" rug has traveled across the country in the "Art" of Playing Cards exhibit. Other works have been featured in Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XVII, Hooked on Rugs by Jessie A. Turbayne, Hooked Rugs Today by Amy Oxford, Contemporary Hooked Rugs by Linda Rae Coughlin and other publications such as Rug Hooking Magazine.

Featured Teacher Exhibit... Each year we select one special teacher for the Featured Teacher Exhibit and assemble a representation of her work to acknowledge her creative style and use of various rug hooking techniques.

Exhibit... Rug Categories
Your hooked pieces submitted for display will be exhibited in one of the following categories. Register your rugs early.
  • Originals... designed & hooked by the same person

  • People / Places / Pictorials

  • Animals / Birds / Insects

  • Orientals / Crewel / Geometric

  • Fruit / Floral

  • Other Hooked Pieces... multi-dimensional hooked pieces such as footstools, purses, dolls, etc., as well as rugs using other techniques and wool in other forms (such as proddy, felting, needle felting, needle punch, punch hook, penny rugs and wool make-do's).
Note: If the design of your piece is an adaptation, reference this in the "interesting information" about your rug on the Rug Exhibition Registration form and register the piece in the category best fitting for the design. Adaptations are not to be included in the "original" category.

  • 2009 Rug Hooking Challenge "Puppy Love"... Do you remember the very first time you gazed into those big brown eyes? No, not your spouse or your date in college….it’s your faithful companion and best buddy that we’re talking about. That very special dog, kitty, canary, potbelly pig, horse, llama, iguana, goldfish or tarantula, just to name a few! Whether they have fur, feathers or fins, our pets are an important part of our lives and families. Create a tribute to these noble beasts, use your imagination; it could be a hooked rug, purse, pillow or maybe even a three-dimensional hooked critter. Now that’s real "Puppy Love"! Send a picture of your pet, so that we may display it with your hooked piece. This challenge is open to patterns of your choosing or original designs to go along with our theme... it is not required that you hook one specific pattern or design.

  • "Celebration Rugs XIX"... Rug Hooking Magazine... award-winning rugs from Rug Hooking magazine's "Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XIX"

Note: If the design of your piece is an adaptation, reference this in the "interesting information" about your rug on the Rug Exhibition Registration form and register the piece in the category best fitting for the design. Adaptations are not to be included in the "original" category.

  • If rug(s) are to be shipped back to you, the following return shipping instructions must be carefully followed:
    • UPS is the preferred return-shipping carrier. Contact UPS at 800-PICK-UPS (800-742-5877). If UPS is absolutely not an option for you, please contact our shipping coordinator, Debbi Russell at drussell@saudervillage.org or at 419-446-2541 ext. 3089 in advance to discuss alternatives, including FedEx Express or the US Postal Service.
    • A prepaid UPS return shipping label (we suggest including insurance coverage and delivery or signature confirmation) must be sent with your rug when you ship it to us. A 3rd party shipping account number referenced on the return-shipping label is also an option.
    • The packaging (box or tube) that you used to send your rug(s) to us in must be reusable to return ship the rug(s) back in, which is why it’s so important to use a new, strong and sturdy container.
    • No CODs. It is not an option to supply a credit card number for return shipment.
    • For Canadian and other International shipments, please confirm with the carrier what documents need to be sent to us with your rug(s) for return shipment to you. These documents will likely include a Customs Declaration or International Waybill, three copies of a commercial invoice declaring the value and origin of the rug(s), and the appropriate wording to include on the exterior of the container to ensure the item is returned to you duty free and will clear Customs quickly (Return Shipping Declaration - CANADA GOOD BEING RETURNED TO CANADA. RUG BEING RETURNED TO OWNER. NO DUTY OR TAXES APPLICABLE). Please be sure to: get a tracking number and insure your rug(s).
Security...
The exhibit hall is a secured facility and Village grounds are patrolled after hours. While Sauder Village takes every precaution to protect all pieces brought in for the exhibit, we know you will understand that we cannot accept liability for them. Rug owners are required to carry the appropriate insurance on their hooked pieces.
Awards...
  • The public is invited to vote during the show for their favorite rug in the exhibit. The results of these votes determine the top three "People's Choice Awards", which are recognized with ribbons on Friday. The "People's Choice" is awarded in three categories...
