"Introduction
to Proddy" with Heather Ritchie |
|
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 46:00
PM – 9:00 PM
Class Fee: $50.00 / Members $46.00
Class Size: Minimum 9 / Maximum 15
Location: Founders Hall – Stage Left
Questions for Heather?: Email her at
...
ragrug@rugmaker1.fsnet.co.uk
Proddy rugs are made by prodding or poking short strips of
fabric through backing which has a cut appearance; instead of the loops of
hooking. Heather is a master of proddy. She is well known for her proddy
techniques, with over 35 years of rug hooking experience. She has taught in
Europe, Australia, the U.S. and Canada. This is your opportunity to learn the
basic techniques of proddy, such as shaped and regular, using varying widths of
fabrics. Proddy is a wonderful way to add dimension to your rugs and use all
those leftover scraps too.
Students should bring a piece of open-weave fabric for the
backing (linen or burlap would be ideal but Monk's Cloth is not
suitable for proddy work) and bring a wide variety of wools and materials
including bits of fancy glitzy evening garments, lengths of yarn of all
thickness, printed cottons, pieces of blanket, shrunk/felted fine-knit sweaters,
tartan kilts, plastic bags - anything that won't shred when cut into the little
bits needed for proddy work. Heather will not be able to bring large amounts of
supplies with her for the workshop (that's why she asks students to bring their
own backing fabric) since she's coming from England, so there will not be a kit
fee for her workshop. However she will bring hooky and proddy tools in all sizes
(made by her husband, Les Ritchie) as well as English Wenslydale fleece, both
natural and dyed in a wide range of colors, which will be for sale.

Learn to use various techniques of proddy such as shaped and
regular using varying widths of fabrics. Then you will be able to work on, maybe
even complete, a seat pad or a seasonal wreath for the door. It is a wonderful
way to use all those scraps. Heather will provide design guidance, however,
students will be encouraged to design their own work in this workshop.
Heather is well known for her proddy techniques, with over 35
years of rug hooking experience, she has taught in Europe, Australia, the U.S.

contrasts, close value movement, poisons, and delicious backgrounds. Each
student will do a 12-inch square study, working in any way that pleases, from
abstract meandering, to something more realistic such as a sky or a face or
flowers. This class is appropriate for both beginners and advanced students.
Diane and Jule will be team-teaching this workshop, which makes
it double the fun & filled with information. They are both well known for their
use of color and will bring some of their rugs as examples of how they

wonderful colors using only the three primaries and black. Several different dye
methods, such as dyeing a swatch, dip dye, overdyeing, spot dyeing and dyeing
