Dear Quilting Friends,

Wow! What a great quilt show all of you provided! Four hundred and five quilts, many of which were exceptionally well done, and all exhibited by quilting friends from this region. The six-day show was thoroughly enjoyed by over 5300 visitors in addition to the staff and volunteers of Sauder Village. Give yourselves a pat on the back! To see all the winners, including the Viewer’s Choice winning quilt, log on to www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltfair_winners08.asp.

Quilt Fair - A Great Success!

We could never pull off a big week like this without the exhibitors, as well as many willing and talented volunteers. The pictures give you an idea how the volunteers hang the large bed quilts, and also show demonstrations of a variety of skills in Founders Hall. The Serenity Circles quilt top that Sharon Moore worked on all week is completed and hanging in the quilt shop. Many of you were looking for the batiks used in that quilt so we now have bundled two different packets of fifteen fat quarters each, for a total of thirty used in our sample.

Over the years, many people have admired the handiwork of Velma Kamp as she demonstrates broderie perse appliqué techniques. For those of you who would love to have a piece of her work, she has provided Threads of Tradition with a few blocks that she is willing to sell, including the one she worked on all week at Quilt Fair. Contact the quilt shop if you are interested in purchasing these one-of-a-kind quilting treasures.

I don’t have pictures of the staff and volunteers working at Threads of Tradition, because I didn’t have time to take pictures when I was in the shop. In fact, on Saturday we were so busy that I even recruited Maynard Sauder, President of the Board, to help put fabric away in the sale area! Thanks Maynard!

Over at the Heritage Inn, eager students learned much from teacher Sharyn Craig as she helped the entire group and each person individually plan and work on their project. In the Compass for All Quilters class, at the end of the day, everyone had completed at least one compass block and started several more. The Northwind class had two days to really get going on their new quilt and on Saturday, Sharyn tackled the challenge of helping each student plan a fantastic setting for their orphan quilt blocks, while planting many creative ideas in their minds for future use.

Due to popular demand, in 2009 we have contracted with Nancy Odom to offer classes during Quilt Fair, so plan to sign up early to study with this popular teacher. Registration for classes, as well as for entering a quilt in the show, will be available online on December 2, 2008. Also, clear your schedules for Quilt Fair in 2010 because Sharon Schamber will be teaching classes at the Heritage Inn from Wednesday - Saturday. Judging from the response that I have received to that news, classes will fill very quickly. Registrations for Sharon’s classes will be begin in early December 2009. We already carry books by both of these popular teachers if you want to prepare for class by studying about their techniques.

Upcoming Class

During Quilt Fair, I heard several people comment that coming into Threads of Tradition was like visiting a second quilt show. One of the showstoppers in the shop were the two Double Spiral quilts on loan from Betty Donahue and Chris Hammersmith. These quilts are advertising a special 2-day class that is planned for Saturdays, May 31 and June 21. Jan McKenna Smith, the designer of the Double Spiral quilt is coming to teach you how to make your own version of this striking beauty. Contact Threads of Tradition at 419-445-9610 for more information!

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Weekender Travel Bag class has been postponed until Saturday, June 7. There are still available spaces in this class so you too can make this Amy Butler designer tote.

New Books

The long-awaited Quilter’s Catalog, A Comprehensive Resource Guide by Meg Cox has finally arrived. It is touted as the Bee-All and End-All of quilt information - jam-packed with information, supplies, expert interviews, techniques, community and inspiration. Sections include: all the tools of the trade; the online world made manageable with a guide to the most useful blogs, websites, e-mail lists, free patterns and pod casts; national and regional shows, guilds and the best retreats and quilt museums; and profiles of twenty top teachers. This is a book to help every quilter deepen and grow - keep it as close by as your stash of fat quarters. An excellent value at only $18.95!

Boost your color confidence with bright, bold fabrics! Spotlight on Scraps will inspire you to simply mix hues, values and prints to punch up the color in quilts and give your next - or very first - scrappy quilt real sparkle. This book features 10 projects with a focus on limited color palettes, so it’s easy to achieve success on the first try. Also get beginner-friendly lessons on developing color schemes and learn how to use simple strip piecing, folded corners and fusible appliqué techniques.

Fabric, Beautiful Fabric!

Moda has designed more of what they call convenience quilts. That basically means that the "pieced" borders and blocks are pre-printed on separate bolts of fabrics so that you have the convenience of not piecing or appliquéing all those blocks and borders, but you can still make your quilt any size you desire as well as personalizing it by adding some of your own choices from the coordinating fabrics. Ruby’s Flower Garden and Summer Basket of Flowers are the latest in convenience quilts. Moda fabrics’ fantastic hand and the precision of the printing make these quilts a snap to sew up in a jiffy - everything has been planned to fit together perfectly and to coordinate beautifully.

For the chicken and rooster lovers, Fleurance provides a variety of prints within the rooster theme. Several rooster prints, a stripe, daisy print, and multiple coordinates provide a wide range of possibilities for using this fabric to further your decorating theme.

Last, but certainly not least, we have fabrics for all the bird watchers out there. Cheep Housing by Clothworks features birdhouses, birds and flowers and a free pattern for making a large lap sized quilt. Just the thing for your sunroom or back porch!

I hope you enjoyed this review of our Quilt Show and also the preview of new events and products available at Threads of Tradition. The big show may be over, but our excitement and involvement in quilting continues. I’m sure yours does as well.

Stop in at Threads of Tradition to see what we are up to and to share your latest project.

                                               See you soon! Linda
