Explore the Crafts at Sauder Village
Archbold, OH - On Friday, July 25th and Saturday, July 26th, guests of all ages will be encouraged to take a hands-on approach to exploring many traditional crafts at Historic Sauder Village. During the annual Explore the Crafts event guests can truly "explore" a variety of crafts as they watch talented craftsmen at work and try their hand at pottery, spinning, blacksmithing, broom making, rug hooking, weaving, and more!"Our Explore the Crafts event is all about the experience," said Ann Lux, event coordinator. "What makes this event so unique is the opportunity for guests of all ages to walk in off the street and actually try some of these traditional crafts. This hands-on approach gives our guests an even better appreciation of the skill of our craftsmen here at Sauder Village, and also provides some great memories for all involved!"
During this fun-filled event, craftsmen will share their talents while allowing guests to explore their own creativity. Throughout the Historic Village there will be various activities planned for guests of all ages to enjoy. Visitors may want to try carding and spinning wool, making felt balls and tussy mussies, or shaping a bowl on the potter’s wheel. Some of the other hands-on activities planned for this event include basketry, print making, weaving on a small loom, rug hooking, lace making and woodworking. Guests can try to weave on a potholder, work on a quilting puzzle, sew on a button, and work on a mini broom.
On Friday there will be a tin class (pre-registration is required) and on Saturday guests will have a chance to make a small tin heart cookie cutter in the Tin Shop. Guests will also have an opportunity to make an iron hook in the blacksmith shop.
Special guests will be on hand to showcase their skills during this popular event. Ed McCoppin will be demonstrating the craft of violin making, Lois Lane will be spinning throughout the day and Margaret Murray will make papier mache. Special guest Ron Dilbone will be demonstrating fly tying and will offer hands-on opportunities for guests to enjoy.
Local artist Eric Duepen will be at the Village both days to lead guests of all ages in "the drawing game". This special activity is great for those who think they can’t draw and is lots of fun for families to try together. Free sessions will be available throughout day for guests who would like to tap into their hidden artistic talents!
Another highlight of the day will be the opportunity to meet author Carrie Meyer. Her book Days on the Family Farm: From the Golden Age through the Great Depression paints a vivid picture of Midwestern farm life. Based on farm diaries, the book really seems to appeal to people interested in their own family history. A native of Illinois, Ms. Meyer is currently an associate professor of economics at George Mason University. She will be outside the Village Gift Shop from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. to sign her book and will be speaking in the District 16 Schoolhouse at 1:00 p.m.
Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and each Sunday afternoon from 12:00-4:00 p.m. The Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. The special activities of the Explore the Crafts event are included in the regular Village admission which is $12.50 for adults and $6.25 for students ages 6-16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and discounts are available for seniors and AAA members. And, every Sunday this season children 16 and under receive free admission to the Historic Village. For more information phone 1-800-590-9755 or visit the website at
